Join Us

We are always looking for motivated candidates to join our group.

Working in Our Group

As part of a dynamic and interdisciplinary research group, you will have the freedom to pursue research projects that reflect your interests in quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and related areas. We welcome highly motivated candidates from diverse academic backgrounds, including computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering.

Graduate students receive guaranteed financial support, with optional teaching opportunities for those who wish to gain teaching experience. Group members also have many opportunities for internships and collaborations with academic and industrial partners, and are supported in participating in scientific activities, including international conferences and workshops.

We strive to foster a welcoming, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating environment that values curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. We welcome English and French speakers alike and believe that diverse backgrounds and perspectives enrich our research and group culture and empower us to tackle the most challenging scientific problems together.

An Exceptional Research Environment in Quantum Computing and AI

Located in Québec’s Eastern Townships, approximately 150 km from Montréal, Sherbrooke offers an appealing balance of vibrant university life and peaceful natural surroundings. The Université de Sherbrooke is one of Canada’s leading institutions in quantum research. Together with DistriQ, Sherbrooke’s Quantum Innovation Zone, it offers a unique and exciting setting for studying and developing quantum technologies.

Our group is part of the Institut quantique (IQ), a thriving interdisciplinary community of more than 300 researchers and students working across quantum information, quantum engineering, and quantum materials. IQ’s modern research facility, inaugurated in 2022, provides state-of-the-art infrastructure and collaborative spaces, fostering scientific exchange, creativity, and innovation.

Our group is also affiliated with Mila, one of the world’s leading research institutes in artificial intelligence, providing access to its vibrant AI research community and collaborative opportunities at the intersection of AI and quantum computing.

Through my IBM Quantum Research Chair, our group benefits from close connections with IBM researchers and advanced quantum computing platforms. Our broader research collaborations with leading research institutes, including Harvard University, the University of Michigan, the University of Tokyo, Quandela, Nord Quantique, Xanadu, IVADO, Sandia National Laboratories, and the National Research Council Canada (NRC) further expand opportunities for interdisciplinary research across academia, industry, and national research organizations.

Opportunities and Applications

Graduate Students

Given the interdisciplinary nature of our research, we welcome students with a strong background in one or more of the following disciplines: physics, computer science, mathematics, and engineering. Prior knowledge of quantum computing is preferred but not a strict requirement. Experience in areas such as algorithms, theory of computation, information theory, optimization, machine learning, tensor networks, numerical methods and analysis, quantum physics, and quantum chemistry, as well as strong programming skills, is highly desirable.

To apply, please email [email protected] with the following documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): An up-to-date academic CV.
  2. Academic Transcripts: Undergraduate and graduate transcripts, where applicable.
  3. Research Statement: A brief description of your research interests, relevant background and experience, and why you want to join our group.

Please indicate the position you are applying for (MSc or PhD) in the email subject line. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

Postdoctoral Fellows

We welcome candidates with a PhD in computer science, mathematics, quantum physics, quantum chemistry, or a closely related field. Successful candidates should demonstrate strong mathematical or computational skills, a solid publication record, the ability to learn new concepts and techniques, and the independence to identify important scientific questions and develop original approaches to solving them. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of our research, we particularly value candidates who can work across disciplinary boundaries and collaborate effectively with researchers from different backgrounds.

The ability to use modern AI tools effectively, creatively, and responsibly will be an important selection criterion. We particularly value candidates who can demonstrate how they have used these tools in meaningful and innovative ways in their research, going beyond routine question answering or standard chatbot interactions.

We are recruiting postdoctoral fellows across several research directions. Applications should be submitted through the following AcademicJobsOnline links: (to be updated soon)

Research Scientists

We welcome highly motivated candidates who have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent research in one or more of our research directions. Applicants should have a strong record of research accomplishments, excellent communication skills demonstrated through publications and presentations, and strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with researchers from diverse backgrounds. We also value candidates who are interested in contributing to the mentorship and training of junior group members.

Positions may be available for up to five years, with the possibility of extensions subject to research funding and institutional arrangements. Start dates are flexible.

Research scientist positions will also be advertised through AcademicJobsOnline. Application links will be added here soon.

Undergraduate Internships

We also welcome motivated undergraduate students interested in research internships in quantum computing and related areas. To apply, please email [email protected] with your CV, academic transcript, and a brief description of your research interests.
